By Sam Scott INDEPENDENCE -- Central senior Tyler Morgan qualified for his third straight state golf tournament May 5-6 by taking second overall in the Val-Co Conference tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Course. Morgan, who struggled some during the middle of the season, had rounds of 80 and 75 for a 36-hole today of 155. Ross Martin of Newport took first overall with a 144. The state tournament was played May 12-13 at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell, but results were unavailable at press time. "Tyler has settled down," CHS coach Kevin Brandt said. "His scores have been consistently lower toward the end of the year. He's looking to do pretty well (at state). It doesn't look like weather will be a factor at all." Sweet Home won the Val-Co team title with a 666 total. Newport was a close second at 669, and Taft was third at 675. Central had rounds of 389 and 378 and finished fourth at 767. Other finishers for Central at the district tourney were Daniel Reynero (90-96--186), Scott Shane (113-100--213), Travis Tallan (106-108--214) and Chris Lippert (115-112--227). "The weather was perfect," Brandt said. "The conditions were great. As a team, we shot our two best scores of the year. We improved roughly 40 strokes from start to finish. Next year looks real promising because they're all returning except Tyler." |
