Zshjohn Clark (33) of Falls City goes up for a short shot during the Jan. 29 game at Perrydale.
FALLS CITY -- Falls City earned its second Casco Conference boys basketball victory of the season Jan. 26 with a 61-46 defeat of visiting Oregon School for the Deaf.
"The kids played hard," Falls city coach Terry Newton said. "We've had two or three starters missing for the last two weeks. We've been hit with the flu. It's a compliment to the kids that they came out and played hard. We came out in a full-court press. They had trouble with the press. The whole team stepped up and played well."
The Mountaineers (3-13 overall, 2-8 Casco) were led by John Clark, Stephen Reynolds and point guard Shane Turner. Clark is a 6-foot-3 post who hadn't played organized basketball before this season.
"It's gone kind of like I figured it would," said Newton, in his first season at Falls City after eight years at Perrydale. "We're starting a freshman, two sophomores and a junior. They're basically wasn't a program at Falls City last season. We're basically starting over. We've improved a lot from where we started. The improvement has been huge."
Newton made his return to Perrydale Jan. 29. He received a nice testimonial over the public address system during pregame ceremonies. But then the Pirates went out and beat the Mountaineers 66-37.
"It was nice going back to Perrydale," Newton said. "The people there always were nice to me. I had a fun time with the program there. Obviously, we ran into a better team that night."
