Setter Kaitlyn Hallock and the Perrydale volleyball team played well in a pair of jamborees last week.
PERRYDALE -- After splitting two mini-matches Sept. 4 in the Dufur Jamboree, Perrydale coach Brooke Spencer decided it was time to make a roster change.
Spencer shifted Ellie Carmona to libero, and the Lady Pirates responded by reeling off wins against Sherman County (20-11), Arlington (20-17), Triad (20-8) and Ione (20-18).
Perrydale started the day by beating Joseph 20-5 and losing to Powder Valley 20-15.
"After the Powder Valley match, we knew we had to do something different in our back row," Spencer said. "We moved Ellie Carmona, our only senior, to libero. She's a great defensive player in the back row. Ellie switching positions was really important for us.
"We came from behind against Arlington. We battled really well. We've never fared that well before at Dufur. It felt really good to be that successful."
Other standouts for Perrydale included setters Brooke Barnes and Kaitlyn Hallock. Chloe Buzzel also played well in her varsity debut.
Perrydale also hosted a Jamboree Sept. 3. Visiting teams in attendance were Delphian, Southwest Christian, Oregon School for the Deaf, Central Linn, Veritas, Western Mennonite and Portland Waldorf.
Perrydale did not play southwest Christian but did play and beat the other six teams in games that were played to 25 points.
Ashley Griffin played well for the Lady Pirates at the net.
"We felt really good about it," Spencer said. "It was interesting to see Veritas and OSD because they're in our league. Veritas is much improved and gave us a little bit of a game. Central Linn is a very good team, too, and we came from behind to beat them. We won a close game against Portland Waldorf. It showed some competitiveness from the girls."
