| By Sam Scott DALLAS -- There was plenty of angst and frustration intertwined with the Dallas softball team in 2008 as the team seemingly and unhappily perfected the art of coming up just short in close contests. At one juncture, the Lady Dragons dropped nine consecutive Mid-Willamette outings, and seven of those were two- or one-run games. But the team's season-ending series against longtime league doormat Woodburn was unlike anything Dallas had experienced. The Lady Dragons outscored the Lady Bulldogs by 51 runs in the three games, winning 14-3 and 22-0 May 6 and 7, respectively, in Woodburn and 18-0 May 8 at home. "It definitely was nice to end with some wins," DHS coach Lindsy Perry said. "We needed it. It gave the girls a boost of confidence. We had two girls hit a home run in one game. That was awesome. "I made sure we didn't take them too lightly. I didn't want us to go in cocky. I wanted us to go in confident and to play the game like we can, and we did that. It was good." All of the games were shortened because of the 10-run rule. Nikki Rodriguez earned the pitching wins in the first and third games. Rodriguez threw a one-hitter in the finale and didn't walk a batter in either game. Cynde Postma tossed a three-hitter to record the win in the middle game. Dallas' pitcher fanned seven batters in each of the three games. | | Photo by Sam Scott | | A Dallas player swings for the fence in the May 8 game with Woodburn. |

Sophie Stewart went three-for-four in the first game, and Megan Lytle added a triple. Postma homered in the third inning of the second game, and Lytle added a three-run blast an inning later. "It was kind of funny because my assistant Mark (Hess) predicted we would have two home runs over the fence, and we did. I was not surprised it was those two girls who hit them, either." Dallas (7-14 MWC) finished with 17 hits in the final game. Alex Posey and Morgan Cameron each had three hits. "It was a nice way to end the year, but I like the competition better," Perry said. "I like to see what we're made of. We lost a few games this year, and it was frustrating at times. When you look forward to next year, I know we can be competitive with anybody. We're not as far away as we used to be. There are a lot of things to look forward to in the next couple of years." |
