Margaret "Peggy" May
   Oct. 21, 1921 - July 6, 2008


   Margaret "Peggy" May, 86, of Dallas died July 6 in Salem.
   Peggy grew up in Michigan and joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where she served as a payroll clerk.

She moved to Oregon in the 1940s. Peggy worked for the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles for many years.
   Peggy was always active in the Catholic church and was involved at St. Vincent de Paul in Salem and St. Philip Catholic Church in Dallas. She coordinated and taught Catechism classes at St. Edward's in Keizer. She chaperoned youth mission trips to Mexico and visited Israel twice.
   She enjoyed baking, traveling, calligraphy, bowling, opera, ballet, as well as volunteering at the Dallas Retirement Village, Salem Visitors Center and at West Valley Hospital, where she helped the endoscopy patients.
   Peggy will be remembered for her great sense of humor as well as her help at St. Philip's.
   Survivors include her children, Aaron May, Dolores May, David May and Barbara (Dave) Magnuson; and two grandchildren, Kyle and Amy Magnuson.
   Memorial service was July 11 at St. Philip Catholic Church.

Doyle F. Baughman
   Dec. 6, 1922 - July 6, 2008


   Doyle F. Baughman, 85, longtime resident of Dallas, died July 6.
   Doyle was born in Green Forest, Ark., and moved to Oregon with his family in the 1930s.

After Pearl Harbor he joined the Navy and served with distinction aboard the submarine USS Tunney during World War II. He was a member of the Mighty Mine Dodgers.
   Doyle married Theresa Birchfield in July 1948 and they were married for 59 years.
   He worked in the wood products industry his entire career, mostly with Willamette Industries' Plywood Division in Dallas.
   After retirement, Doyle volunteered as a mill tour guide, worked in his woods chopping and stacking wood and volunteered as a host at the Tillicum U.S. Forestry Campground. He also enjoyed golfing and cleaning and sorting golf balls. Often times he could be found helping others with various projects.
   Doyle was always found with a huge smile on his face as he loved to greet and talk to all who he encountered. Doyle cooked on the submarines and was a fantastic cook. He hosted many large dinner parties at his Dallas estate.
   Doyle loved his Lord and helped charter Dallas Faith Baptist Church. He served 35 years as a cook at Tadmor, the Conservative Baptist Mens Camp.
   He was an avid golfer and a member at Elk Horn Golf Club. During his career he recorded two holes in one and won two club championships. He was president at the Oak Knoll Golf Club for two years.
   He was preceded in death by a grandson.
   Survivors include his wife, Theresa; daughters, Caren Christensen, Diane Myers, LaDonna Privratsky and Charlene Andresen; sister, Bonnie Johnston; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
   Memorial service is at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at Restlawn Funeral Home in Salem.
   Contributions are suggested to Emmanuel Bible Church or Cedar Village Memory Unit in Salem.

George Verl Reddell
   Feb. 16, 1916 - July 11, 2008

George Verl Reddell, 92, of Independence died July 11 in Independence.
   He was born in Cave Creek, Ark., to Floyd and Goldie Reddell.
   He married Alice Ruth Nix on Aug. 1, 1939. They had been married 68 years.
   Verl was a retired farmer.
   He was a member of the Church of Christ in Monmouth.
   Survivors include his wife, Alice Nix Reddell of Independence; daughters, Dorothy May Floyd of Independence and Linda Bunn of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; son, Glen Reddell of Albany; sisters, Maxine Wadlington of Turlock, Calif., Verbal Pagala of Stockton, Calif., and Norma Gadberry of Caruthers, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
   Service was July 15 at the Church of Christ in Monmouth, with interment at Hilltop Cemetery in Independence.

Barbara Elaine Matteson
   Feb. 8, 1949 - July 6, 2008


   Barbara Elaine Matteson, 59, of Dallas died July 6.
   She was born in Salem to Ray and Mary Alys Letterman Tarter.

She graduated from Central High School in 1967.
   She married John Matteson on Sept. 19, 1970, in Independence. They lived in Alaska from 1973-1982 in logging camps. They returned to the mainland and she worked for House of Lloyd for 18 years. For the past two and half years she had worked in sales with Charter Communications Cable Co.
   Sewing was a hobby Barbara enjoyed and she made quilts. She was the family social director, planning large family dinners and many activities. Barb enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world, including the Holy Land, Greece, Mexico and Spain. She enjoyed fishing in Alaska and beachcombing.
   She was a member of the Faith Evangelical Free Church, Dallas, and Bible study groups at the church.
   Survivors include her husband, John of Dallas; daughters, Misty (Jon) of Keizer and Lyndsey Matteson of Portland; granddaughter, Ava; parents, Ray and Mary Tarter of Monmouth; brothers, Gerald (Kathy) Tarter of Monmouth and Kevin (Leeann) Tarter of Keizer; and sister, Karen (Mike) Lockabey of Wrangell, Alaska.
   Service was July 11 at Faith Evangelical Free Church and interment was in English Cemetery in Monmouth.
   Contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center, which handled arrangements.

Wayne Bailey
   May 26, 1924 - July 12, 2008


   Wayne Bailey, 84, of Dallas died July 12 in Keizer.
   Viewing is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, July 18, at Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. Service is at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. Interment with military honors will be in the Dallas Cemetery.

Gary D. Anderson
   May 28, 1946 - July 12, 2008


   Gary D. Anderson, 62, of Monmouth died July 12.
   He was born in Portland to Angie and Mathew Anderson.
   He graduated from Centennial High School in Gresham and Oregon College of Education in Monmouth. He entered the Army and served in Vietnam. He later continued his education, receiving a master's degree in counseling from OCE.
   Gary began his career as a social studies teacher and counselor at John F. Kennedy High School in Mount Angel, where he worked for 10 years. He then moved to Jewell and served as the vice principal of the high school. He later moved to Cloverdale as the superintendent/principal of Cloverdale Elementary. His career later took him to Tillamook High School, Falls City High School and he retired as principal at Willamina High School in 2001. He was respected for his dedication to the education of children.
   Gary was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Independence and served as a Eucharist Minister and a member of the pastoral council.
   Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping throughout his life and took up woodworking after retiring.
   He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph Murphy and John Murphy, and sister, Paula Dorsett.
   Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Debbie of Monmouth; children, Brian and Kathryn, both of Monmouth; sister, Mary Ables of Vancouver, Wash.; and brother, Jim Anderson of Portland.
   Funeral mass begins at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Independence.
   Contributions are suggested to St. Patrick Church for the church landscaping and parking lot fund.
