WOU music hall to be rededicated Community members are welcome to attend a 50-year rededication of Smith Recital Hall on the Western Oregon University campus on Thursday, Nov. 13. The event in Smith Hall, which was overhauled this summer with new carpeting, acoustics, chairs and stage improvements, includes a gala and performances by the faculty from the university's music department. There is no cost to attend, though donations will be accepted. For more information: 503-838-8275. --- Rhododendron group will meet tonight Members of the Willamette Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society, serving Polk County, will meet at 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 12) at First Methodist Church's carrier room, 600 State St. in Salem. Ruth Estrada will speak on "The Best New Plant Introductions from Monrovia Nursery." For more information: 503-838-1133 (daytime). --- Veterans' benefits topic of workshop Don Johnson, Veterans Service Officer, will speak on veterans' retirement living benefits and other benefits and how to apply for these during a presentation Friday, Nov. 14. The event, hosted by Dallas Retirement Village, is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be held at Village Apartments/Residential Living Building at 310 W. Ellendale Ave. in Dallas. Seating is limited and an RSVP is required to attend. Johnson will clarify much of the confusion about who qualifies and who does not for benefits, and discuss the paperwork involved to apply for benefits. A question-and-answer session will follow the seminar. Refreshments will be served. For more information: 503-623-1856. --- Holiday grieving is seminar focus Willamette Valley Hospice will host a "coping with the holidays" workshop from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the group's office at 101 3rd St. NW in West Salem. The winter holidays are generally perceived as "the most wonderful time of the year." But for those who are facing new grief after the death of a loved one, the holidays may instead be a time filled with pain and sadness. And even for those for whom grief is not as fresh, the holidays may serve as an annual reminder of the loss. For more information: Willamette Valley Hospice Bereavement Services, 503-588-3600. --- Garden project set at Gentle House A Fall Rose Garden Workday is scheduled Saturday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon at Gentle House, 855 N. Monmouth Ave. in Monmouth. This is not only a workday, but a hands-on demonstration and an opportunity to learn how to winterize a variety of roses with instruction from Polk County Master Gardeners. The event is free and open to the public. Participants are asked to bring their own work gloves, hand pruners and pots for cuttings. For more information: Sarah, 503-399-9436. --- Christmas Pageant seeking volunteers Volunteers are needed for the 68th annual Rickreall Christmas Pageant. Performances run from Dec. 4-6. Individuals are needed to fill spots in the choir, including soloists and pianists. Would-be actors are also wanted for speaking and nonspeaking parts in the play, as well as ushers, stage and crew, fundraising and publicity. You can also visit http://home.earthlink.net/~christmaspageant/ --- Author to sign books at bazaar Local writer Sonja Ruth Ely will sign copies of her recent historical novel "Into The Dust" Saturday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Monmouth Senior Center's Holiday Bazaar. Ely's novel is set in the 1866-68 period and tells the story of how two families settled in Polk County and the struggles it took to get here. The novel can also be purchased at the Polk County Museum and online from Barnes & Noble. For more information: 503-881-2501. --- American Legion to be discussed Al Ratzlaff, commander of American Legion Post 20, will present a program on the Dallas American Legion at the Polk County Museum on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 1:30 p.m. Ratzlaff, a Vietnam vet, will discuss the establishment of the Carl B. Fenton American Legion Post in Dallas in 1920. Fenton was one of the first recruits when America entered World War I and he served with distinction in France. He died soon after coming home and the post was named in his honor. Ratzlaff will discuss the activities of the Legion post over the years and will show its place in the community. For more information: 503-623-6251. --- Audition winners to perform concert Western Oregon University will host the musical theater student auditions for the National Association of Teachers of Singing on Saturday, Nov. 15. Competitors are college-age students. A concert featuring the winners of the auditions will be held at 7 p.m. on that day in the Smith Recital Hall. The event is free to the public. For more information: 503-838-8275. --- Understanding IEP workshop scheduled A free seminar titled "Putting the Pieces Together: Understanding the IEP (Individual Education Program/Plan) Process and Product" will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at Ash Creek Elementary, 1360 N. 16th St., Monmouth. The workshop is designed to educate and support parents, families and professionals in building partnerships that meet the needs of children, youths and young adults from birth to age 26 with a full range of disabilities. Parents and caregivers of children with disabilities and the professionals who work with them will benefit from this workshop. Preregistration is requested. The first, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 18 and 19, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Salem Electric, 633 Seventh St. NW. Contact: 503-362-3601. The second is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 19 and 20, from 8 a.m. to noon at Capital Manor Retirement Community, 1955 Salem-Dallas Highway NW. Contact: 503-362-4101. Classes are designed to promote personal awareness, sharpen driving skills and include driving tips and issues related to mature drivers and physical challenges. Cost is $10 per person. Space is limited and preregistration is required. Preference is given to drivers over 50. --- Training offered for CASA volunteers Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Polk County is offering a series of volunteer training sessions this fall in Dallas. The training is scheduled for Nov. 18, Nov. 25, Dec. 2, Dec. 9, Dec. 13, Dec. 16 and Dec. 20. It takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Reading Time Books, 857 Main St., in downtown Dallas.
