The Independence Farmers Market, which operates out of the Sterling Bank parking lot in downtown Independence, is open Saturday, Nov. 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Polk County Farmers Market, located at the Rickreall Grange along Highway 99W just south of Highway 22, is open Sunday, Nov. 23, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. |

Flu shots given today at hospital West Valley Hospital is offering an additional flu vaccination clinic today (Wednesday, Nov. 19) from 2 to 4 p.m. at 525 SE Washington St. Those receiving shots must be 18 years and older. No appointment is necessary. Shots cost $20 each. Medicare is accepted; however, West Valley Hospital is unable to bill Medicare HMOs for this flu clinic. Donations sought for jog-a-thon Students at Whitworth Elementary School in Dallas are seeking sponsors and collecting donations now through Dec. 12 for their upcoming jog-a-thon school fundraiser. Donation checks can be sent to the Whitworth PTC at the school, 1151 SE Miller Ave., Dallas, OR 97338. Receipts for tax-deductible donations can be issued upon request. Rotary leader to visit local club Dennis Wickham, District Governor of Rotary District 5100, will speak to members of the Monmouth-Independence Rotary Club at noon on Thursday, Nov. 20. Wickham's presentation, which takes place at First Baptist Church in Independence, will include personal experiences from his journey in Rotary. He will also present an award to a club member exemplifying the Object of Rotary, which is to encourage and foster the ideal of service. Oakdale will host family art night Oakdale Heights Elementary School will host a "Creative Arts Family Night" on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the school, 1375 SW Maple St., Dallas. The event will include painting, drawing, clay, craft projects, music, dancing, food and beverages, and free bookmarks. Supplies will be provided. Students are also encouraged to bring art from home and school to be displayed in the "art walk." Families and children of all ages are welcome. For more information: 503-623-8316. Chess competition includes area girls Three 9- and 10-year-old girls from Ash Creek Elementary competed in a youth chess tournament in Portland on Nov. 8. Michelle Morris, Alexia Gardner and Bailey Sanchez received T-shirts and certificates for participating in the largest all-girl chess competition at the the Harriet Truman Girls School, sponsored by Chess for Success. Coach Connie Page said more than 230 girls were in attendance. It was the first statewide chess competition for girls ages kindergarten through eighth grade. Door-to-door food drive is Thursday Dallas High School students, led by the school's leadership classes, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Dallas Rotary, will be going door-to-door in the community collecting canned food on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The event is part of Dallas High's annual canned food drive. Proceeds benefits H2O. Participants will gather food in several Dallas-area neighborhoods in an effort to make donating easier so that contributors do not have to bring donations to the high school. Donations may be left at the front door if you are not going to be home at this time. Volunteers are also needed to help with collections and to supervise students. ICAN student art being displayed Selections from art students participating in the Dallas ICAN Create after-school art programs will be featured in a display through the end of November at the Dallas School District office, 111 SW Ash St. Art from the Art Start program for children ages 5-8 and the Art Adventures program for children ages 9-11 will be included in the display. Snow sports film scheduled at WOU A showing of the snowboarding and skiing film "Under the Influence: The People, Places, and Moments that Define our Riding," will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, and Friday, Nov. 21, in Monmouth. The event, hosted by Western Oregon University Campus Recreation and Teton Gravity Research, takes place in ITC Auditorium 211. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. The event includes a movie, live emcee, free giveaways, raffles, and more. Tickets are $5 for students with a WOU identification card and $8 for all others. Proceeds help fund community snow buses. Senior music jam on tap for Nov. 20 The Dallas Area Senior Center's monthly "music jam" is Thursday, Nov. 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the center, 955 SE Jefferson St. Area singers and musicians are welcome to participate. Honky-tonk piano player Carlot Hall, guitarist Kermit Bail and the Dallas Area Seniors "Leopard Chicks" are part of this monthly musical event hosted by Michele Campione. Baskett Slough field trip set Salem Audubon Society has scheduled a field trip to explore the area around the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge and other parts of Polk County on Saturday, Nov. 22. Roy Gerig will lead the group. He expects to see a good assortment of raptors and other birds. The group will meet at the Salem Audubon Society Nature Reserve at 9 a.m. to carpool. Participants should bring a lunch and plan to be back early in the afternoon. To reach the reserve, drive west on Edgewater Street Northwest and turn right on Eola Drive. Fundraiser will aid Food Share Marion-Polk Food Share's seventh annual "Empty Bowls" fundraising event opens Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Willamette Art Center in Salem. The bowls were created by local artists, including those from Polk County, at the Willamette Art Center, which is located at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. The bowls will be on sale through Dec. 21. Auxiliary begins See's candy sale See's Candy goes on sale Monday, Nov. 24, at West Valley Hospital to help fund its auxiliary's scholarship program to benefit a 2009 graduating Polk County senior. Candy will be sold until gone from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the hospital lobby, 525 SE Washington St., Dallas. Candy boxes are $5 each. Warm, clean and wearable clothing for all ages, including coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and socks, may be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week at Starlite Bowling Lanes, 394 Main St., Dallas. West Salem Kiwanis meets every Tuesday West Salem Kiwanis, which serves the Dallas, Independence and West Salem areas, meets every Tuesday at 11:20 a.m. at the Eola Inn, 4250 Highway 22, West Salem. Central High hosts luncheon for seniors All senior citizens are welcome to attend Central High School's annual free Thanksgiving luncheon, scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 26, at noon. The luncheon, in the cafeteria at Central High School, 1530 Monmouth St., Independence, will include food, a raffle for prizes and entertainment by the Central High Jazz Band and Mainstreet Choir. Thanksgiving meal, service is Nov. 26 Trinity Lutheran Church of Dallas will host its 21st annual community Thanksgiving celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at the church, 450 SE Washington St. A traditional turkey dinner with all of the trimmings, as well as vegetarian dishes, will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Local churches will celebrate a community Thanksgiving worship at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Local duo raises guide dog for blind Matthew Grandquist of Independence and Anna Finke of Dallas recently presented their Guide Dogs for the Blind graduated canine, Fillmore, to his new blind partner, Willie Williams of Antioch, Tenn. Grandquist and Finke raised the black Labrador from a puppy for the Guide Dogs for the Blind program. They witnessed Fillmore's graduating as an official guide in a formal ceremony held in September at the guide dog campus in Boring. For more information: www.guidedogs.com. Account established for youth's funeral A community donation account has been set up at US Bank for the funeral expenses of Jeffrey Alan Gregory Jr., a third-grader from Monmouth Elementary School who died Oct. 29 in Dallas. ICAN calendar of youth art available Finalists from the ICAN Create Youth Art Contest are featured in a full-color 2009 calendar available through Dallas Intercommunity Activity Network. Young artists, inspired by the works of Degas, Van Gogh and more, have created the art included in the calendar. Calendar proceeds will support ICAN programs. Holiday wreaths sold by group Orders are being accepted through Dec. 2 for handcrafted holiday wreaths to support the economic and leadership development of a local women's cooperative, Women Fighting for Progress/Mujeres Luchadoras Progresistas (MLP). The wreaths, made with noble fir, holly, pine cones and a red bow, are 24 inches in diameter and cost $30 each.
