D23 candidates to debate at WOU A debate between the two Republican candidates for the Oregon House of Representatives District 23 nomination is tonight (Wednesday, May 14). The event, hosted by the College Republican Chapter at Western Oregon University, begins a 7 p.m. in the Oregon Room of the Werner University Center at WOU in Monmouth. The debate between Craig Pope and Jim Thompson will be moderated by Vance Day, chairman of the Oregon Republican Party, and officers of the WOU College Republican Chapter. It is open to the welcome. Special Olympics selling tickets Polk County Special Olympics is selling tickets to the Monday, July 14, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes baseball game as an organizational fundraiser. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Tickets for the contest, which includes a game ball, cost $10 each. The package is valued at $14. Dist. 20 candidate to host gathering Richard Riggs, Democratic candidate for State Representative in House District 20, will host a town hall meeting today (Wednesday, May 14) at Rick's Place. The gathering is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Rick's Place is located at 123 Main St. E. in Monmouth. Forest pesticide course offered A one-day class on forestry vegetation management is being offered Thursday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. The class takes place in Building 61, Room 102, at 4000 Lancaster Drive NE. Instructor Kurt Spingath will emphasize the fundamentals of forest pesticides, including common herbicide formulations, timing of herbicide applications, and the use of herbicides in riparian areas. Seniors schedule big rummage sale Dallas Area Seniors will host their annual Senior Center Rummage Sale Friday and Saturday, May 16-17, at the Dallas Senior Center, 955 SE Jefferson St. This is one of the major fundraisers of the year for the seniors. A large selection of items ranging from clothing to handcrafted items to antiques will be for sale. The event takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. Refreshments will be available. Spring book sale at Monmouth library Friends of the Monmouth Library will host a spring book sale Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17, at the library, 168 S. Homeowners clinic offers assistance Oregon homeowners, including those from Polk County, can receive help understanding their loan documents and preventing foreclosure at a free "Mortgage Loan Clinic" Friday, May 16, in Salem. Homeowners can meet one on one with mortgage lending examiners from the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services during the clinic, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Conference Room 260 at the Labor and Industries Building, 350 Winter St. NE in Salem. Tractor safety for teens on tap Registration for the Teen Tractor Safety Certification program for Polk County is scheduled Friday, May 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall. The training session takes place Friday evening, May 23, and all day Saturday, May 24, at Central High School in Independence. Cost is $45, and includes instruction, a written test and driving test. Legion breakfast set for Saturday In honor of Armed Forces Day Saturday, May 17, American Legion Dallas Post 20 is hosting a public breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. at Dallas United Methodist Church. The church is at 565 SE LaCreole Drive. The all-you-can-eat breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, fruit, juice and coffee. There is no charge for the meal, but donations are accepted, which help raise money for American Legion programs. Armed Forces Day, which has been the third Saturday in May since 1949, was established to honor soldiers and veterans from the five branches of the military -- Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Cleaning of Dallas planned for May 17 A spring cleanup of the downtown Dallas area is planned for Saturday, May 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Check-in headquarters for volunteers interested in helping with the cleaning project is at Courtyard Coffee House, 156 SE Mill St. Those able to participate are asked to brings tools such as shovels, rakes, buckets, trowels to weed, and gloves. Wood inspection topic of course A class on wood destroying organism inspection and evaluation is being offered Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Chemeketa Community College. It will focus on providing the state-licensed commercial pesticide applicator or certified home inspector with advanced knowledge of wood destroying organisms. Also scheduled to be discussed will be the ways to communicate the risks inherent with structural infestation as well as the findings and solutions of an inspector. Cost is $66. Museum to host clothing style show A style show featuring clothing from 1850 through 1950 will be presented by the Polk County Historical Society Saturday, May 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the Polk County Museum in Rickreall. The show will be hosted and narrated by longtime society member Georgia Wildfang, who has worked with and researched the museum's collection of historical clothing since it opened. Those attending the show will see a wedding dress and men's wedding suits, men's hunting clothing and boots, a dress from the 1920s, and a number of other outfits. Arc of Polk County plans bingo day Arc of Polk County will host an afternoon of bingo for people with developmental disabilities Saturday, May 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. People of all ages with developmental disabilities are welcome to participate. Dallas HS senior awarded scholarship Melinda Wagner, a graduating senior at Dallas High School, is the recipient of a $2,000 grant through AmeriTitle's parent company scholarship program. The scholarship is awarded to sons and daughters of employees with three or more years of service at JELD-WEN companies, including AmeriTitle. The program is available to eligible students entering their first year of college who have met various requirements. These include specific deadlines, taking appropriate college entrance exams, and acceptance into a nationally accredited college. 'Artist Gathering' planned by PCL Partnerships in Community Living Inc. will host its eighth annual "Artist Gathering" Monday, May 19, at Main Street Coffee House, 169 Main St. W. in Monmouth. The 7 to 8:30 p.m. event is free to attend. It will include wine and hors d'oeuvres, a chance to visit with local artists and an opportunity to preview PCL's upcoming art auction. Grief support group offered by hospice Willamette Valley Hospice, serving Polk and Marion counties, will offer another of its six-week grief support groups for adults beginning Tuesday, May 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at 1015 3rd St. NW in West Salem. The group will meet every Tuesday through June 24. Professional counselors will facilitate the meetings. There is no cost and the public is welcome, but advance registration is requested. Digital photography editing class on tap A class on editing digital photography is being offered beginning next week at the Dallas Center of Chemeketa Community College. Introduction to Editing Digital Photography is scheduled for four consecutive Wednesdays beginning May 21. It continues through June 11. The course will cover editing digital photography. Topics range from expanding your computer file management skills to printing and e-mailing photos. The class runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and participants should bring their digital camera and manual to each class. Cost for the course is $48. 'Community Showcase' takes stage May 21 Children involved in the various Dallas Community Activities programs will be performing during the Spring Community Showcase, set for Wednesday, May 21, at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at LaCreole Middle School, 701 SE LaCreole Drive. Scheduled to perform are the Dallas Community Children's Choir, the Harmonic Convergence Choir and the Karate for Everyone team. Young artists participating in the Art Adventures and Art and Artists programs will also be displaying their work. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted. Semiannual dance event coming up Polk County France School of Dance will hold its semiannual Food Drive and Dance Recital Wednesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Talmadge Middle School, 510 16th St. in Independence. Admission is a donation of two canned food products per person. All donations benefit Dallas Emergency Food Bank and Lions' Club of Monmouth-Independence.
