Schools' scores are mixed bag

POLK COUNTY -- Students in elementary and high schools scored slightly better overall on statewide assessments, according to the Oregon Department of Education.

The results were mixed for school districts in Polk County, where improvements or declines often occurred in greater percentage point changes -- some of them dramatic.

In the reading assessment, for example, Central and Dallas seventh-graders showed large gains with 7 percent and 22 percent respectively.

In that same category, there were 32 percent and 17 percent fewer students at Falls City and Perrydale, respectively achieving benchmarks.

The state's aggregate data for all school districts showed an average of 77 percent of students meeting standards in 2009-10 compared to 76 percent the previous year.

All of Central's tested grades, except fifth-graders, showed more students meeting or exceeding benchmarks in math than the previous year.

But the percentage of Central students passing muster in that area was generally lower than statewide averages, ODE reported.

In Dallas, all grades had fewer students meeting standards, though the losses ranged from 5 percentage points to less than a percent.

Only fifth-, eighth- and 10th-graders from Perrydale showed improved from the previous year on the science assessment. All tested Falls City students improved math scores from 2008-09.
