Mansell would be

positive change

Having worked with Melanie Mansell both as a defense attorney and a prosecuting deputy district attorney in Polk County, I can say she is a force to reckon with.

She always is prepared and zealously represents her position. She follows the letter of the law but is still able to maintain a warm and friendly level of respect by all who work with her.

These qualities alone make her the clear choice to represent Polk County as the first female judge in its history.

Join me in voting for Melanie. Polk County is ready for a positive change.

County fair well

worth attending

This year we attended the Polk County Fair. Apparently it was during the same period that last week's letter writer found that the "experience was disappointing."

We enjoyed a rocking band which was followed by the youth talent show, which the writer described as "some kids doing something on a small stage." We watched all 29 acts and applauded every kid. It was wonderful.

Although we only had a few hours, we took in many of the exhibits including hog judging, the floral and agricultural exhibits, and the commercial exhibits.

It is always interesting and even inspiring to see what our fellow citizens of Polk County can do. It would not be possible to see everything in "about an hour or so."

Unless you hit the rodeo or demolition derby as we have in years past, maybe the Polk County Fair might not seem terribly exciting. However, Polk County is an agricultural county with a few small towns and our fair reflects what we have here.

My expectations were met and I want to thank and encourage all the people involved with maintaining the fairgrounds and putting on a fine event year after year. And for those craving a high level of excitement, drive an hour and go to Portland or Eugene.

Judge's support

is not unethical

Last week's letter "Judge's support seems unethical" included false, misleading and possibly libelous statements.

The writer implied that Judge Horner's support for Sally Avera for Circuit Court Judge is unethical.

Judicial ethics rules expressly allow judges to support judicial candidates.

Concerned voters should have the benefit of knowing who supports each candidate.

Avera is supported by both Polk County judges, and has strong support from local police.

Monte Campbell is supported by the "good old boy" network and politicians.

Voters can decide which recommendations are relevant to determine who would be the best judge.

Disclosure needed

for canned foods

Everyone has heard of the large-scale outbreak of salmonella in eggs. I predict the next food problem will come from the large grocery food chains.

They are selling store brands of canned fruit and vegetables. They show on the can who distributes and the trademark, but not where the food is produced or canned. In most cases, they do not show whether it is a product of the USA. Store brands cost less money, but are they safe to consume? I think we should know where the product is produced and canned.

The Washington lobbyists have earned the big bucks. They are paid by large food chains. Our congressmen in Washington share in the blame for the same reasons -- large amounts of campaign money.

Remember the pet food from China that killed many of our pets? Are you ready for canned food from China?

Reading sponsors

Summer is winding down and back-to-school time has arrived. We've had a fun-filled summer at the Monmouth Public Library.

Hundreds of local kids, teens and adults participated in our 2010 Summer Reading Club this year, enjoying reading, performers, crafts, activities and prizes.

Thank you to the Friends of Monmouth Library for your ongoing, year-round support -- without you we would be unable to provide all of the fun children's programs that we offer. I would also like to thank our Summer Reading Club sponsors, local and regional businesses and organizations that all contribute toward making our Summer Reading Club great. Since the list is too long to print here I invite you to visit our FaceBook page and see the list of local sponsors.

Thank you all for recognizing the importance of supporting our local youth and for helping to encourage reading as a lifelong reward in and of itself.
