8/18 MI Town: Patty Taylor Dutcher

For those who have been looking forward to hot -- and even hotter -- days all summer, looks like you've been granted your wish.

For the rest of us in MI Town and all over the Willamette Valley, we're using all of the best keeping-cool tips we can think of, including: getting up at dawn's early light to do the necessary outdoor and indoor chores; eating light meals; drinking many glasses of cold water; and trying to find a cool place to relax during the hottest part of the day and evening.

In just a few short months, we'll be fondly remembering these summertime days when we're huddled around the fireplace. In the meantime, whose turn is it to make the next pitcher of lemonade?

Once the really, really hot weather hits our neck of the woods, home improvement and hardware stores are featured on the TV news as fans and air conditioning units seem to be flying from their shelves.

As I reach into the back of the upstairs closet in search of a fan in need of dusting before plugging in, I wonder where did all the fans that people bought last summer end up? There must be some kind of black hole where old cooling devices go to die in order to create this demand year after year.

This (Wednesday, Aug. 18) evening, you can beat the heat and enjoy funk and soul music as the Jacob Merlin Band is featured in Monmouth's Main Street Park. Enjoy a good time under the trees with family and friends as the fun summertime concerts continue.

Don't put away the picnic basket quite yet, as the featured outdoor movie on Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Independence Riverview Park Amphitheater is "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." Then enjoy an evening down by the riverside during the Friday, Aug. 20, summer amphitheater concert with Patricia Feltman and Cool Conspiracy Jazz.

Happy 30th anniversary to MI Town's Marquis Spas, headquartered in Independence. This employee-owned company began in 1980 and their spas are available in stores all over the USA.

Marquis has been affiliated with the Make A Wish organization for the past 10 years, and has granted 400 (and counting) "wishes" during that time.

It's great to know that our friends and neighbors are doing good things and manufacturing quality products in our community and nationwide.

With school days quickly approaching, we all can do some good things to help children.

Dallas Resource Center is accepting school supplies for children of low-income families in the area. Please contact their office at 503-623-8429 if you can help with donations of paper, pens and other items that can help our children be prepared for school this year.
