7/23 M-I Town: Patty Taylor Dutcher

MI Town's collective heart is broken yet again at the news of the death of another of our youngest and most precious children. The loss of a beloved child causes us all to reassess our beliefs, question our faith and cry out against such a tragedy. We all need to do whatever we can to help our friends and neighbors begin to cope with their profound losses, and to understand that their lives are forever changed. Our loving and caring community members must reach out and offer comfort and condolences to the grieving families and let them know we care.

All of our backyard gardens seem to be at their best during midsummer, with lots of sharing of fruits and vegetables and the pure enjoyment of the bounty that surrounds us all.
For those who aren't able to plant gardens or have the luxury of fruit trees in the backyard, farmers markets are the real deal.
On Saturdays, the Independence Farmers Market is located in the Sterling Savings Bank parking lot at 302 S. Main St. and is open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Dallas Farmers Market is open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Plain and Fancy Gifts parking lot, located at Oak and Main Streets.
On Sundays, the Polk County Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Rickreall Grange. If you'd like to include a Sunday drive in your weekend activities, visit the Kings Valley Farmers Market at Highway 223 and Maxfield Creek Road between 1 and 4 p.m.

Guthrie Park presents an evening of country music in Main Street Park in Monmouth this evening (Wednesday, July 23) beginning at 7 p.m. Bring your picnic basket and enjoy another opportunity to get together with friends and neighbors.
And what could be more fun than another outdoor concert -- this one on Friday evening at the Independence Amphitheater featuring The Dimes at 7:30 p.m.
"Nancy Drew" is the featured movie on Thursday, July 24, in the Amphitheater. Bring the family and enjoy a summer evening outdoors.

I'm a member of the Citizen's Advisory Board for Polk County. We are a group of community volunteers who review cases of children in foster care to be sure they are receiving all of the necessary educational and health services, as well as a safe and caring home.
If you are interested in helping children receive needed services and can attend a meeting one day a month, please contact Maria Chavez-Haroldson at Maria.Chavez-Haroldson@ojd.state.or.us to find out more information about the program.
This is a great opportunity to meet others who are interested in working with children and families right in our community. Training is provided at no cost and yearly conferences give us a chance to learn more about helping our most vulnerable children and their families.

Let's all be mindful of all the children, bicycle riders and dog walkers who are out enjoying the summertime days and evenings as we drive from one place to another. It only takes an instant for a serious accident to occur and we want everyone to arrive safely at their destinations.
