9/8 MI Town: Patty Taylor Dutcher

We had great times at the concerts in Main Street Park in Monmouth and the movies and concerts at Riverview Park Amphitheater in Independence during July and August.

We will miss those special evenings gathering with friends and neighbors while enjoying picnic suppers or snacks available from our local merchants.

These events don't just happen by themselves. A hearty thank you to those who worked so hard to provide special evenings for all of us. During the months to come, we can all remember to patronize our local businesses and merchants who do so many good things for all of us in MI Town.

It's time to watch for students of all ages as they walk to and from school.

All those big yellow school buses will be sharing the roads with us in the early morning and late afternoons, carrying their precious cargo -- our children and grandchildren -- for the next several months.

We all need to be extra careful while driving in our communities. School zone speed limits are also in effect. Since our law officers can't be everywhere all the time, it's necessary that we observe those speed limits and drive carefully in school zones.

Congratulations to Katie Ayers, who, with her Golden Retriever, Hudgins, was awarded Senior Champion in the 4-H Dog Showmanship competition at the Oregon State Fair.

Emilie Peterson and her Afghan Hound, Mister, received the Reserve Champion award.

Both young women are members of the same Polk County 4-H Club, whose leaders are Barbara Griffin and Chris Wallen.

While at the state fair, I saw numerous ribbons awarded to many of our local 4-H members. A special thank you to voters who passed the ballot measures to ensure that these worthy programs will continue to be funded in the future.

Applications for the Elks National Foundation's Most Valuable Student scholarship contest are now available at Independence B.P.O.E. Lodge, located on Main Street.

High school seniors who are U.S. citizens are eligible for these awards, and their families don't need to be Elks members.

All applications will be judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need. The closing date for applications is Dec. 1.

The backyard trees are loaded with an abundance of fruit this summer, and it's only a matter of time before the good smells of cinnamon and applesauce fill the entire house. It's almost time to get out the applesauce cake recipe, not to mention filling the freezer with pies. When those cold, dark and rainy January days arrive, there's nothing better than a hot slice of homemade apple pie.
